Lands & Natural Resources

The ʔaq̓am Land and Natural Resources Department’s goal is to steward ʔaq̓am lands and resources, as well as other lands within Ktunaxa ʔamakʔis, for the benefit of all ʔaq̓amnik̓ and Ktunaxanin’tik with community engagement and participation being high priority. We work to strengthen ʔaq̓am’s stewardship skills and knowledge of ka ʔamaknaⱡa (our land) and to reconnect with the spirit of the land and ʔa·kxam̓is q̓api qapsin (All Living Things) through projects informed by community, the Lands Committee, the Language Speakers and Knowledge Holders Committee, and Chief and Council. Projects are related to returning water to the landscape, working to understand and steward healthy wildlife populations, and actively managing forests to restore natural fire regimes and ecosystems. Caring for ʔaq̓am lands is done following ʔaq̓am’s ratified Land Code, Land Use Plan, and ʔaq̓am laws in recognition of ʔaq̓am being a Land Code nation who makes their own land based decisions.

Stewardship of ʔaq̓am lands and resources, for the benefit of all ʔaq̓am community members, is one of our greatest responsibilities.
